Mallory Meads enjoyed making coffee and hot cocoa for the homeless at Liberty Plaza back in January. But the Chelsea Beach Middle School 8th grader admits she liked serving pizza Friday night at the Plaza just a little better for one simple reason: “I didn’t spill anything.”
Meads was joined by her brother Mason and their parents, along with Forsythe Middle School’s Heather Hale and her mom, and Beach Middle School 7th grader Mya, her mother, and younger brother Mason. All three middle school students had previously volunteered with Anna’s Kindness serving food to those in need, so this was an experienced crew.
Mallory and Mya had both worked the coffee station the last time they volunteered at the Plaza, so they joined with Mya’s younger brother Mason, to serve pizza. “I liked it because it was busy,” said Mya. And it was. The slightly milder temps and clear skies meant attendance was up for the Friday night meal, yet somehow the pizza lasted the full hour.
Could be because there was bonus food being served last night. Mason Meads and his mother and father were scooping out soup along with a mac and cheese dish. The line for the new entrees was nearly as long as the one for pizza.
And while the food lines were busy early, the coffee station was steady throughout the hour. Heather and her mom Christine poured coffee, tea, and hot chocolate for visitors. Heather had previously joined Anna’s Kindness feeding the less fortunate at St. Andrew’s Church. This time, she was outdoors in the elements, but did get to hear more stories from the guests as she poured the hot water. “I liked both (events),” she said.
Thank you to the Ann Arbor Vineyard Homeless Ministry for allowing Anna’s Kindness to be involved in their wonderful service.
