For the Ann Arbor A’s Gold 12U baseball team, there may not have been a game Friday night, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t competition.
The ballplayers — Alex’s teammates last season — joined Anna’s Kindness Friday night in Liberty Plaza in downtown Ann Arbor to help feed the homeless. And there was friendly competition throughout the park.
Forsythe Middle School 7th grader Ryan Gensheimer and his 8th grade sister Emili raced to see who would hand out their bags of food first (if you are keeping score, Emili won). Standing between the siblings, Jackson Hamilton was handing out bottled water and dancing to the music which was echoing throughout the plaza.
On the other side of the park, a friendly competition was underway between Slauson Middle School 6th grader Avery McEwen, Nathan Freisthler and Brenden Phillips. Which food would run out first: hard-boiled eggs, oatmeal and raisin cookies, or cookies and cream mini cupcakes? (Again, if you’re keeping score, a late surge helped the cupcakes just barely edge out the eggs).
Forsythe seventh graders Luke Williams and Lewis McCammon teamed up to hand out pizza. Luke folded two pieces in half, passed it to Lewis who wrapped them in cellophane and handed them to the visitors, a perfect double play combination.
And when the boys weren’t serving food, they were being entertained with stories from some of the guests. One guest explained to Luke and Lewis how much homework he got in school from a teacher who he insists was a mermaid. Jackson listened patiently to a very long, never-ending story about baseball from another guest. And another gentleman took one of the hardboiled eggs and fired it straight to the ground to crack the shell … or perhaps flaunt the speed of his fastball to Coach Dyke McEwen who was standing nearby (the gentleman’s age, not his arm, may have been the bigger issue keeping from a spot on the 12U team roster).
Thank you to coaches Todd Gensheimer and Dyke McEwen for teaming up with Anna’s Kindness, and to Tom Probst and Vineyard Church for allowing our volunteers to take part.
