The girls were warned the milk may get messy.
It did.
Eighth graders Mia Sanborn and Maddie Baybeck were standing at the sink, trying to pour milk from a large jug into pitchers, and while most of the milk landed in the desired location, there was some milky misses: in the sink, on the counter, and dribbling onto the floor.
It was the only mild mishap of the morning, as Slauson Middle School students joined Anna’s Kindness in feeding those in need at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church Saturday morning. The Breakfast at St. Andrews has been serving the less fortunate for 36 years, and have been most gracious to allow Anna’s Kindness volunteers to help serve in their kitchen. And this was the first Anna’s Kindness event with Slauson Middle School (woohoo).
Maddie and Allie Nutt served hot oatmeal and grits, sixth grader Sebastian Parent passed out baked goods, eighth graders Ryan Wang and Gabriel Rodgers filled the juice glasses, and Mia poured out coffee.
When Maddie and Allie weren’t scooping out breakfast, they were being regaled with tales of cats, honey badgers, elephants, and killer bees by one of the guests. And talk of wild animals got the attention of Sebastian, who had plenty of his own stories and facts to share.
Once guests were finished with the plates, Ryan and Gabriel began washing the dishes … and a little of themselves.
“Whoa,” said Gabriel, as the power of the industrial sink’s spray hose took both boys by surprise. (Gabriel’s apron certainly looked worse for wear when he was finished for the day).
As the guests began to leave, Allie, Mia and Sebastian cleaned off the tables and stacked chairs; Ryan and Gabriel went into overdrive washing dishes; and Maddie brought in, cleaned off, and refilled the cereal dispenser.
Thank you to Linda and Mark, who helped supervise the students, and Cathy for hosting the event for Slauson. And thank you to Slauson Middle School principal Dr. Lisa Anglin ond asst. principal Mr. Szwejkowski for spreading Anna’s Kindness to their students and families.
