The foster care dogs at Mikey & Me are sleeping good tonight. And not just because Anna’s Kindness volunteers from Slauson Middle School wore them out Sunday afternoon.
It’s the beds. The new dog beds. Beds so nice that Slauson 8th grader Jessica Daily reckoned the extra thick EcoSpring dog beds — donated by Wags to Whiskers — were nicer than the one she slept on at home.
The 8 middle school volunteers not only helped carry in and set up the new beds and bedding for the current residents at Mikey & Me, they performed a number of chores around the dairy barn where the dogs (temporarily) live.
Jessica and Ellie Maloy cleaned out their kennels and helped prepare the bedding for the new beds. Eighth graders Gabe Latta and Zackary Wilhelm brought in boxes of wood chips. Mia Sanborn and Jessica made signs for volunteers (“no food AM”, “clean bowls go here”, “dirty bowls go here”).
And all the students, including Parker Brown, Keegan Fraley, and Ava Whalen (and her sister Stella) took the residents on walks. The new residents included two young ladies, Thelma and Louise, who were fortunately nowhere near as dangerous nor elusive as their namesakes (admittedly, a 1991 movie reference may have been lost on our student volunteers).
And while Thelma, Louise, Priscilla, and Oscar all look forward to a day when they are adopted into their future home, they can wait comfortably (literally) in their current homes, thanks to their new beds.
Thanks to Mikey & Me owner Dan DePew for allowing Anna’s Kindness to continue being a part of their wonderful mission. And a special thanks to Slauson parent Cathy Sanborn for hosting this event on behalf of our organization.
