When foster families need to shop for their children, they often come to the Michigan Foster Care Closet.
And thanks to Anna’s Kindness volunteers Thursday evening, those families may have a slightly easier time finding what they are looking for.
Slauson Middle School sixth graders Elise Braun, Sara Grover (and their moms), seventh grader Gabe Sanborn, and eighth graders Ava Selby and Ruby Shepherd all helped reorganize the shelves throughout the Closet, which supplies foster families with everything from clothing, shoes, toiletries, toys … all free of charge.
In some cases, reorganizing simply meant taking items off the shelves, folding, and restocking more neatly. For other more packed shelves, reorganizing required removing some of the excess items and putting them in storage bins on shelves in the backroom. The volunteers worked so well together, they figured even famous organizing consultant Marie Kondo would have loved their results.
The girls especially liked organizing the baby clothing section, work which elicited the occasional: ’Awww, isn’t that cute.’ The work went by even quicker because Elise and Sara were friends at school and in the same Girl Scout troop, so they had plenty to talk about. Meanwhile, eighth graders Ava and Ruby were given the lowdown on what to expect at Pioneer High School next year by freshman Hayley Marchand, who helped co-host Thursday night’s event along with Slauson parent Cathy Sanborn.
Thursdays are an open house evening for families to come and shop at the Closet. Toward the end of the evening, one foster family stopped by to pick up a car seat carrier, as well as a few other items for a 5-month-old they were caring for.
Thank you to Cathy Sanborn and Hayley Marchand for co-hosting this volunteer evening on behalf of Anna’s Kindness, and a very special thank you to Rachael for allowing us to be a part of her wonderful mission to serve foster families.
