Tyler almost never gets tired.
But then he met the Anna’s Kindness volunteers from Forsythe Middle School.
Tyler, one of the ‘residents’ at Mikey & Me’s foster dog care facility, was ready for a long dog nap following an afternoon with our 8 student volunteers.
Forsythe 8th graders Daniel Rogers and Christopher Van Lent, and sixth graders Catherine Van Lent, Mark Kalosa-Kenyon, Lucy Shafer, Norah LeCloux, Leo Stone and Riley Howe walked and played with Tyler and all the dogs living at Mikey & Me, as the animals anxiously await adoption into their forever homes.
Mikey & Me owner Dan DePew provided all the students and their families with the history of Mikey & Me (which just recently celebrated its 100th adoption … woohoo), and — along with Mikey & Me adult volunteers Mary and Art — provided instructions on the proper way to care for and walk the dogs, as well as some of they individual history.
The volunteers got to play with the dogs (Tyler, Lillian, Benson, and Fred) in their pens, and take them for long walks on the property behind the barn where the dogs live. Fed had just returned from knee surgery so there were special instructions for him (no stairs, no running for a little while). The students also swept the floors and filled water jugs for the animals.
Our volunteers enjoyed the different personalities of all the residents, and every one of the students seemed to fall in love with a different dog. But the dogs had one thing in common: They all looked very happy to be living at Mikey & Me. They never stopped wagging their tails.
Thank you to Cristina and her son Daniel for hosting this opportunity on behalf of Anna’s Kindness and to Leo and Mark’s mom for helping. And a huge thank you to Dan and his Mikey & Me volunteers who allow our middle school volunteers to play a small role in brightening the lives of these rescued dogs.
