A young dog has a lot of excitement and enthusiasm. Four of them? Well, they have enough energy to power a small town.
But they were no match for the Forsythe Middle School girls who volunteered at Mikey & Me Friday afternoon.
By the time Anna’s Kindness volunteers had finished walking them, running them, and playing with them for two hours, those young pups were ready for a good night’s sleep.
Anna’s Kindness hosted its first event of the new school year at Mikey & Me, the foster dog facility in Chelsea that provides a temporary home for rescued dogs as they await a forever family. Our volunteers provided plenty of attention and interaction to the half-dozen residents currently living in the huge dairy barn that has been converted into a dog shelter.
After watching a couple of the youngest dogs chase each other, eighth graders Chelsey Hewett, Madeline Ellies, and Sophia Marrs spent some of their afternoon training one of the ‘residents’ to walk the seesaw (yes, they were eventually successful).
Eighth grader Dahlia Taylor thoroughly enjoyed her time with Trooper, her favorite, and maybe could have convinced mom Jessica to adopt him … but he’s already spoken for. Trooper is expecting to be in his new ‘forever’ home within the week.
Seventh grader Emilia Pokryfke spent a lot of time on trails walking (and running) her dogs, ensuring that they would sleep soundly when they got back to their kennels.
The Kama family — eighth graders Michal and Maya and their sister Shira and mother Orit — got a chance to walk all of the available residents. They may have saved the best for last; Marcus, their last week of the day, was a favorite of the family. In fact, Marcus was so well-behaved, it was allowed to join the volunteers for the group photo after.
Thank you to Mikey & Me founder Dan DePew for allowing Anna’s Kindness to volunteer, and thanks to Forsythe teacher Margaret Raupp and counselor Amanda Hollis for hosting the event for the girls. And thank you to our volunteers who brought more than 4 dozen cans of dog food to donate to Mikey & Me.
