After a fairly rainy week, the skies cleared slightly Saturday morning and the sun peaked out from behind the clouds, which meant it was perfect weather for … hitting homeruns.
Anna’s Kindness middle school students from across Washtenaw County volunteered as baseball buddies for the Miracle League Saturday in Plymouth. And it’s a good thing there weren’t base coaches, because the Miracle League ballplayers were running past first base. And second base. And … well, you get it.
These Miracle League ballplayers — who were all 12 and under — were hitting and rounding the bases repeatedly, which meant our volunteers either had to keep up or, in the case of wheelchair-bound ballplayers, needed to push their buddy around the basepath for a homerun.
“Yes, let’s go to third,” Forsythe eighth grader Heather Hale was told by her wheelchair-bound ballplayer just as they arrived at second base for a double. In other words, don’t stop until we reach home. We’re scoring.
Forsythe seventh graders Nico Colias and Noah Silkworth, and Clague seventh grader Olivia Kalikan were buddies to some of the most active ballplayers. When they weren’t running the bases, they were just, well, running somewhere or throwing something.
Mill Creek Middle School seventh grader Lourdes Patierno stayed busy with her buddy when they were in the field, sitting in centerfield and rolling a baseball to each other.
But there were other Miracle League ballplayers who were fiercely dedicated to playing their assigned position. Forsythe seventh grader Greita Ham, eighth grader Heather Hale, and Slauson Middle School eighth grader Trinity Harris all buddied with ballplayers who were responsible for the left side of the infield, so they remained alert and ready for ground balls. Anna’s brother, Alex LeFort, was paired with a pitcher so they both had to be especially sharp in the field.
Clague seventh graders William Epps and Ashe Baskey both buddied with outfielders who also needed additional help when at the plate. The boys did a terrific job helping their ballplayers swing the bat.
Thanks to all the Anna’s Kindness buddies and their parents who drove them to Plymouth Saturday morning.
