Anna’s Kindness families sew face masks for the vulnerable homeless

May 5, 2020
Miller Manor office manager Jody Piechura and one of the residents accept the homemeade face masks from Anna’s Kindness families.

Once Clague 8th grader Vivianna Hoffman saw the invitation from Anna’s Kindness, she told her mom flatly: “Let’s do it.”

Over a dozen Anna’s Kindness families made face masks for the homeless, creating unique designs utilizing a rainbow of fabric for every personality. The middle schools students and their parents created over 100 masks of various fabric and styles, using whatever was available around the house to produce some a very colorful array of face coverings.

For most families, a parent was directly involved in the production. But not at Vivianna’s home.

“(Vivianna) did everything, she researched it, got out the sewing machine, everything,” said her mom, Deanna. “All I had to do was change the bobbit.”

The face masks were delivered to the Mercy House and Miller Manor. Miller Manor is public housing apartment complex which provides housing for the homeless. Mercy House provides a welcome respite for the homeless, offering food, showers, restrooms, and washer/dryer for those in need. Mercy House guests selected their masks during the House’s weekly Saturday morning breakfast.

Thank you to our volunteers: Clague’s Lydian Field, Ashe Baskey, William Epps, Vivianna, and Principal Che Carter’s family; Forsythe’s Heather Hale and Bailey Edison; Tappan’s Danika Stone and Lucia Bliss; Chelsea High School’s Mallory Meads; and Skyline High School’s Emili and Ryan Gensheimer.

We’d also like to thank Josh, Amanda, and Esquire Interiors for graciously contributing face masks that were given to Ann Arbor’s homeless.

And finally, thank you to Jody and Aubrey at Miller Manor, and Peggy and Gracie at the Mercy House for allowing us to help some of the city’s most vulnerable in a small way.
