Had there been a fire, these 8 middle school girls would have put it out.
In what resembled something of a bucket brigade, Anna’s Kindness volunteers scooped out the dirty water — bucket by bucket — from two large horse troughs so that the horses at Starry Skies Horse Rescue and Sanctuary could have clean drinking water. It took more than a half-hour for the girls to remove enough of the dirty water before they could flip over the troughs to drain the remaining water.
Oh, and did we mention it was dirty work? Most of the girls came prepared with high boots, as they sunk and stuck in the mud in the back pen, which threatened to pull their boots off their feet. It all made for something of a slow slog.
But that wasn’t all. The volunteers also removed some of the sticks and branches hiding in the grass, so that the horses wouldn’t step on them, especially when the snow falls and the branches can be hidden from a horse’s view. And the middle schoolers finished their morning chores by grooming a number of the horses on what turned out to be a beautiful November Saturday.
Thank you to Anna’s Kindness volunteers — Clague Middle School 8th graders Sophia Lee, Georgiana Kerr, Olivia Kalikin, 7th graders Aditi Gopalakrishnan, Luciana Vanini Benitez, and Tappan Middle School 7th graders Colette Riggs and Sophia Mackler — for spending their morning to help a wonderful charity that rescues abandoned, neglected and abused horses.
