Each time Anna’s Kindness students volunteer at Mikey & Me foster dog facility, they help the rescued dogs become more comfortable around adults and children. And on days like Saturday, it’s the dogs who help acclimate the children.
Neither of our Anna’s Kindness volunteers on Saturday were dog owners, so spending time in the cages and on walks with a wide variety of dogs was a somewhat new experience for Clague 8th grader Ashon Carter and 6th grader Lakshya Jaiganesh. And the students got plenty of time to become more comfortable, since both their dads were allergic to dogs.
Lakshya had her hands full with Cody, the stubborn puppy who was more interested in getting into the play area than going for a walk. With persistence, she was able to get him distracted just enough to convince him to accompany her out on the trail.
Gabby was very timid and unsure with new people, but Ashon was so patient and gentle with her. At one point, after Ashon had been petting her and talking quietly to her, Gabby moved close to him and looked right into his eyes.
Thanks to Ashon, Lakshya, their parents and Anna’s Kindness board member Kate Lewit for hosting this event. And thanks to Dan and his Mikey & Me volunteers for allowing us to be involved.
