Anna’s childhood friends haven’t forgotten her.
As we approach the five-year anniversary of Anna’s passing next week, her many best friends in Rapid City took time out of their weekend Saturday to remember her in the most touching way possible: Volunteering at her ‘first love’ to celebrate her legacy of kindness.
More than a dozen of her former classmates joined with Anna’s mom, Fran, and her brother, Alex, and spent their morning working at the Humane Society of the Black Hills, where Anna’s compassion and kindness for those less fortunate really blossomed.
The volunteers greeted the shelter dogs on Saturday morning with a special ‘frisbee treat’: peanut butter spread on a paper plate that was placed into each dog’s kennel for them to enjoy. The girls then brought out toys for the dogs and, one by one, the dogs were allowed to leave their kennels for a little bit of “play time” and a whole lot of “love time” with our volunteers. The volunteers finished by picking up some of the trash which had blown onto the Humane Society grounds.
It was a slightly bittersweet reunion with Anna’s classmates, since most of them will be graduating high school this year. For that reason, we realize this may be the final time we can get them all together in one place … and so there was no better place than Anna’s first and favorite charity.
Thank you to Emily Helgeson, Tiffany Rodestvadt, Aspen Lushbough, Anna Mueller and her mother Michelle, AJ Cannon, Connor Schmitz, Emily Hubbert, Ella Monroe, Madelyn Sliper, DeeDee Martin, Kelbie Powers, Summer Cannon and Elizabeth Martin. A very special thank you to Jerry Steinley and Caitlin Ausmann of the Humane Society for hosting Anna’s Kindness.
