The backstories of the rescued dogs who arrive at Mikey & Me can be heartwrenching.
But their comeback stories are heartwarming and still being written, as they await the final chapter of the story: adoption into a forever home.
On Saturday, Anna’s Kindness volunteers brought Christmas bags of chewable treats and bundles of love and affection to the rescued dogs at Mikey & Me, a foster dog charity in Chelsea.
Eight middle school volunteers from across Ann Arbor took the dogs out for repeated walks in the 30-degree December weather, stopping by the play area for a game of fetch, before heading back to their kennels for more one-on-one time, which may have included a treat or two. Some of the dogs were also spoiled with a visit to the meet-and-greet living rooms, where they were allowed up on the sofas and chairs, to snuggle with the volunteers.
It was a very energy-filled, fulfilling morning for the dogs, who benefit from Anna’s Kindness visits because our young volunteers help socialize the dogs for potential adoption into a family home filled with children. The dogs no doubt slept well Saturday afternoon once our volunteers left, because while the dogs had lots of energy and excitement at the outset, they seemed to fade near the end once they realized they were no match for the boundless energy of a middle schooler. #dogtired
Thank you to our volunteers: Slauson Middle Schools’ Joey Ball, Adam Gardner, Eva Rutyna, Scarlett Middle Schools’ Eva York, Tappan Middle Schools’ Claire Cleland, Kaia Wong, and Clague Middle Schools’ Joshua Vesia, and Lakshya Jaiganesh.
Special thanks to former AAPS teacher Kate Lewit for helping co-host the event, and to Dan and his volunteers for allowing our volunteers to spend a morning with the wonderful residents at Mikey & Me.
