High winds, heavy rain and storms last month turned the pastures at Starry Skies Horse Rescue and Sanctuary into a minefield of dangerous debris for the hoofs of the horses.
Anna’s Kindness volunteers helped remove many of those tree limbs, sticks, and other hoof hazards on Saturday morning, all under the watchful eyes of the ‘residents’. When they were finished, they had not only cleared out a safer space for the rescued horses to roam, but their pile of wood built what could be Ann Arbor’s largest bonfire and weenie roast.
Once the field was clear, the volunteers rejoined the pack of horses and gave them all a good brushing as they — the horses, not the students — grazed lazily on their hay. (There’s nothing quite like a refreshing hair styling delivered by a dozen student ‘groomers’ during your lunch hour.)
Thank you to our Anna’s Kindness volunteers: Huron High School’s Khalil Jones, Skyline High School’s Emily Plum and Heather Hale, Forsythe Middle School’s Lila Edison and Reed McCammon, A2 STEAM’s Ever Banner-Hubbard, Saline Middle School’s Sophia Shark, Clague Middle School’s Zenio and Joshua Vesia. Thanks to Anna’s Kindness board member Kate Lewit for helping with the students, and a very special thanks to Bridget and Starry Skies for allowing our volunteers to be a part of their wonderful mission.
